How to measure a dog correctly

Correctly measuring your dog is especially important when choosing clothing, collars, harnesses, beds, or travel crates.  The dog should be calm and stand upright on all fours during the measurement. The best tool is a soft tape measure or a string, which you will then measure. After measuring the dog, do not forget to reward it.

1. The length of the back is measured from the withers (the highest point between the shoulder blades) to the base of the tail. The head and neck are not included. The length of the back helps determine how big a bed your dog needs to lie down flat. For comfortable lounging, it is ideal to add at least 10–15 cm to the length of the back

2. Chest circumference  Measure just behind the front paws. The tape measure should not be tight, just snug. If it is clothing, add 1-2 cm to the margin. This information will be especially important for you when determining the correct harness size. It should not rub against the armpits or pull the neck.

3. Measure the neck circumference in the middle of the neck, exactly where the dog wears the collar .  It is recommended to insert one or two fingers under the meter,  which will provide the dog with greater comfort without strangulation. Remember that For the correct harness and clothing size, for which this information is also important, always measure the lower part of the neck.

4. Height at the withers is measured from the ground to the highest point of the shoulder blades. A dog's withers is the highest point on their back - specifically the spot between the shoulder blades , where the neck meets the back. Measure from the side and run the tape measure along the front leg.

5. You can easily measure the weight of small dogs. Simply stand your dog on the scale and subtract your own. If your dog is larger, we recommend using a scale at your veterinarian's.
